As Genesis offers the story of a family, of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and his sons, Exodus offers the birth of a nation from that family. In his superb Founding God’s Nation: Reading Exodus (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2021), Leon Kass writes:
“Exodus not only recounts the founding of the Israelite nation, one of the world’s
oldest and most consequential peoples. It also sheds light on enduring questions
about nation-building and peoplehood. It invites us to think about the moral
meaning of communal life, the nature of political leadership, and the standards
for judging a social order as better or worse.”
Exodus also gives us some of the most famous and memorable stories in all of western literature: the infant Moses being rescued by an Egyptian Princess, the ten plagues, Moses parting the Red Sea, Mount Sinai wrapped in fire and smoke, the ten commandments . . .. This new course debuts this quarter!
